Welcome! I am an award-winning children’s book author, magazine writer, writing teacher and speaker.  My wide-ranging passions include astronomy, volcanology, art, music, history, nature, waves, jokes, crayons, and mud — anything that catches my fancy.  I believe in the power of discovery, untold stories, and persistent questions. Whether writing fiction or nonfiction for children or adults or teaching workshops, I hope my work opens doors, opens minds, opens possibilities.

Here you can explore more about my background, my books, my articles, and my teaching. I also have lots of stuff here especially for my favorite people – teachers and kids. Enjoy!

Blogs

Please check out two great blogs where I am a regular contributor:

Viva Scriva is a tight-knit group of children’s book authors and illustrators in Portland, OR. We believe effective critique can make your writing sing and your career soar. Read our group blog to learn how to start and run a critique group, how to offer an effective critique, how to revise based on critiques, and how to handle the challenges of critique groups and the writing life.

I.N.K. (Interesting Nonfiction for Kids) is a group blog written by many of the very best writers of nonfiction for children: Steve Jenkins, Steve Sheinkin and Jim Murphy; Jan Greenberg, Barbara Kerley and Deborah Heiligman. Learn how these writers practice their craft: their research techniques, fact gathering and detective work. Check out how they find unusual tidbits, make the facts fascinating and create something kids will love to read. Get ideas for how to use excellent, award-winning nonfiction in your home or classroom. Rethink nonfiction for kids.
