What are work-for-hire books? Sometimes a publisher will offer a writer a flat fee to write the text for a book. The book may be part of a series. Or the publisher may know exactly what they want in the book. The writer follows guidelines to write the text, and the publisher owns the copyright. For publishers it's a way to retain tight editorial control and to avoid paying royalties. For a writer it can be a fun a way to write about a topic of interest and earn some extra cash.
